The Beginning of Sexual Immorality
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah,
and the name of the other Zillah.
Genesis 4:19

Our meditation today has an original title. While human sexuality was an aspect
of Adam and Eve’s life in Paradise, it did not have the meaning then that
the world gives it today. Due to man’s fall, sexual relationships are regarded
as a means of pleasure and as a consumer activity.
In our text Lamech, who was a descendant of Cain, receives a very serious
label. He is the first man on earth to come up with the idea of marrying
not just one, but two women. Already we see sin being multiplied in Cain’s
family. Lamech had no understanding of the blessing of one man and one
woman being brought together by the Lord to become one flesh.
The fact that Lamech took to himself two wives is also very enlightening.
Why would anyone ask God to give him a loving wife if they could pick and
choose for themselves? Genesis 4 shows something of man’s ancient history.
When we read this passage carefully, we see how relevant this horrible development
is still today. Lamech’s choices in life were very confrontational,
somewhat similar to how the world speaks, sings and laughs about sex. How
do you react to this? Do you regard human sexuality as a precious gift from
God, or have you become tainted by worldly ideas whereby the most beautiful
and intimate relationship is degraded?
How blessed when we lay all our sexual sins before the Lord. On the basis of
Christ Jesus’ sacrifice, He is willing to give you strength to guard your heart
in the midst of this impure world.

Psalter 360:1 (based on Psalm 128)
Blest the man that fears Jehovah, Walking ever in His ways;
By thy toil thou shalt be prospered, And be happy all thy days.
