Andrew Leads Simon to the Lord Jesus
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, ‘We have
found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.’ And he brought
him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, ‘Thou art Simon the son
of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas,’ which is by interpretation, a stone.
John 1:41, 42
Read John 1:35-43
If anyone knows who Andrew and Simon, two fishermen from Capernaum,
were, then the title of our meditation today might seem rather odd. Simon
and Andrew are introduced to us as brothers. Simon allowed himself to be
led by Andrew. Simon was usually a step ahead, while Andrew was more of
a follower, but on this occasion Andrew was the leader. Simon was led to the
Lord Jesus by his brother Andrew. It is striking that Simon allowed himself
to be led. It is as if Brother Andrew took Simon by the hand.
In reading the gospel account, we are given the impression that this situation
did not last very long. In fact, Andrew soon disappears in the shadow of
his brother. But, at the critical moment related in our text, Andrew took the
leading role. The question remains whether Simon would have met the Lord
if Andrew had not led him.
Has such an Andrew also entered into your life? Has anyone ever told you
how he or she met the Lord? Perhaps their testimony made you envious
and curious so that you allowed yourself to be led to Him. That’s how the
history of man’s spiritual life often evolves: when someone else is so full of
God’s grace that they want to share what they have found. Have you also led
someone to the Saviour?
Question: Are you attracted to the Lord Jesus, causing you to say to others,
“Come with me?”
Psalter 447:1 (based on Psalm 122)
My soul was glad when unto me They said, “Come, we will now repair
Unto Jehovah`s house of prayer, There to adore His majesty.”
Jerusalem, where blessing waits, Our feet are standing in thy gates,
Here shall we bring our supplications. Jerusalem is builded well,
It is the pride of Israel, Securely knit are its foundations.
