Where Do We Seek Our Livelihood?
And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the
country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
Ruth 1:1
Read Matthew 6:24-34
During the time when the judges ruled and everyone did what was right
in his own eyes, there was a famine in Canaan, so Elimelech immigrated to
Moab with his wife and two sons. There was no organized worship of the
Lord in Moab. Instead, idols were served there. Elimelech took his family
from the promised land without asking for God’s approval and permission.
He did not think that was necessary.
When we consider our daily food, work and the activities we have planned,
where does God fit in? That is the question we are confronted with here. Are
we sincere when we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread”?
When you attend church, the message conveyed there reveals the true Bread
from heaven—the Lord Jesus. When the devil tempted the Lord with daily
bread, He replied, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by
every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4).
Are you making plans for your future course of studies, your career or your
living accommodations? That’s wonderful, but be sure to seek God’s approval.
Thought: The Word of God and His church should be of utmost importance
to us.
Psalter 444:2, 5 (based on Psalm 103)
O bless the Lord, who all thy need supplieth! Thy soul with good He fully satisfieth,
And, like the eagle’s, He renews thy youth. Jehovah doeth right for He is holy;
His judgments for the oppressed and lowly
Are done in perfect righteousness and truth.
Like as a father looketh with compassion Upon his children, lo, in such a fashion
The Lord doth look on them that fear and trust. He knoweth that our frame is
weak and humble; How void of strength, how prone we are to stumble! And
He is mindful that we are but dust.
