Longing to be Instructed
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh; for the LORD revealed
himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
1 Samuel 3:21
Read 1 Samuel 3:1, 19-21
Samuel learned to seek the Lord during his youth. God used his parents to
aid him in this. We read that his mother was a woman of much prayer, and
through the Lord’s guidance, she dedicated her son to the service of God in
Shiloh. This was not a flourishing time period for the church. We have only
to remind ourselves of the ungodly lives of Eli’s sons. Samuel had to tell their
father of the judgments which were going to come upon them.
In spite of the decline of the church, the Lord kept Samuel safe through
His Word. Samuel repeatedly received messages from God. Today God still
speaks in a similar way to those who consecrate their lives to Him. When
once the Lord speaks to us through His Word, He will do so again and again.
This should incline us to open our Bibles regularly, and to prayerfully anticipate
the worship services where the Word of God is declared.
Question: What is your greatest longing in life?
Psalter 349:1, 2, 4 (based on Psalm 122)
My heart was glad to hear the welcome sound,
The call to seek Jehovah’s house of prayer;
Our feet are standing here on holy ground,
Within thy gates, thou city grand and fair.
God’s people to Jerusalem repair To hear His word
and worship Him with praise;
The throne of justice stands eternal there,
Messiah’s throne through endless length of days.
For all my brethren and companions’ sakes My prayer shall be,
Let peace in thee abide;
Since God the Lord in thee His dwelling makes,
To thee my love shall never be denied.
