I Believe
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him. And Jesus said,
For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might
see; and they which see might be made blind.
John 9:38, 39
Read 1 John 5
In our meditation today we are confronted with a great miracle. An individual
may say that he or she believes, but much so-called faith today does not
really have any substance. Consequently, when someone declares they have
faith, it may not be biblical but merely based on their own understanding.
We have before us an example of true faith. For, when the formerly blind
man confessed his faith, the object of his faith was the Lord Jesus. Someone
with a true faith has been given very keen insight! For, outwardly, there was
nothing special to be seen about Jesus. He was not a macho man or anything
like that. Isaiah 53:2 says that He hath no form nor comeliness; and when
we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. Yet a true
faith sees much more, namely, that He is the Son of God; therefore it finds
everything in Him.
How can you know whether your faith is true faith? There are two main
distinctions: The first is that God’s Son is the Object of true faith, and we
begin to worship Him just as the man in our passage today did. The second
characteristic is a fruit of the first; we learn to bow deeply before the Lord.
In this way God is honoured.
We see much of the same thing throughout the entire Bible. When the Lord
gathers His people they become small in themselves while God becomes very
great. Or, to say it in the words of John the Baptist: He must increase and I
must decrease. The Lord Jesus did not ask whether the formerly blind man
was converted or not, but who and what Jesus of Nazareth had become for
him. Most blessed are they who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!
Thought: He who has the Son has life; but he who does not have the Son
does not have life!
Psalter 400: 3,6 (based on Psalm 146)
Happy is the man that chooses Israel’s God to be his aid;
He is blessed whose hope of blessing, On the Lord his God is stayed.
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, And the stranger He befriends,
Helps the fatherless and widow, Judgment on the wicked sends.
