God’s Calendar

God’s Calendar

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2 Peter 3:8

Read 2 Peter 3:8-13

Many of us maintain an agenda, a calendar or a monthly planner in which we write down the appointments we make, upcoming meetings and important events. It is surprising how quickly a calendar can fill up with all kinds of activities. Perhaps you have already noted a number of important events for next year. In our society, we must always be aware of dates and times that we have arranged to meet others.

However, when we think of the greatness of God, His timetable is far beyond ours. Therefore His agenda will look very different than ours. A day is as a thousand years and vice versa. When we apply this concept to His return upon the clouds of heaven, it is not long ago that He said: Behold, I come quickly (Rev. 22:12). It is as if He said this yesterday. When he comes, He will seek out His bride. Should His bride not be looking in anticipation for His return?

Just imagine that two young people have pledged themselves to each other. Before they can get married, the bridegroom must perform his military duty in a foreign land. No one knows how long he will be gone, but the bridegroom had promised that as soon as he has completed his obligation, he will marry his bride. It is a long wait for the bride, but she knows he promised to return, so she waits expectantly.

This should be the image of the bride of Christ, the Church; she waits for her Bridegroom, the Lord Jesus. Some people may shrug their shoulders indifferently, but the bride knows He will come; has He not said so Himself? This is her comfort; this is what her hope relies on. Is that also true of you? Then place your agenda beside God’s Word, the Bible.

Thought: Are you waiting expectantly for Christ’s return?

Psalter 247:4,5,6 (based on Psalm 90) A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten as a dream Dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.
