And Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us From Evil
“Put on the whole armour of God…” —Ephesians 6:11
Read Ephesians 6:10-20
God had created man perfect, but through Adam’s fall, man’s perfect life came to a sudden end. Consequently, now we are inclined to all manner of evil and make wrong choices again and again. We choose to oppose God and by our thoughts, words and deeds show our allegiance to the devil.
In this petition of the Lord’s Prayer, we pray that God would guard and keep us from making wrong choices. We pray that God will not lead us into temptation. Concretely, we are asking God to not allow our thoughts to dwell on things that would separate us from Him.
In the second part of this petition we pray for deliverance from the evil one. This not only refers to the devil, but also the corrupt inclinations of our heart. In our Scripture reading, various weapons are listed with which we are to fight against evil. We are exhorted to put on the whole armour of God (Eph. 6:11), so that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Why do you need armour?
