Sermon of the Month: April 2025

For how many of us are the words of Psalm 109:4b, “I give myself to prayer,” true? Prayer is one of the hardest and yet most essential spiritual disciplines of the Christian life. According to Sinclair Ferguson, “Christians do not simply say prayers; in a sense they become their prayers.” So for something so important, surely we need Biblical direction for how to pray. We should ask, along with the disciples, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

In Pastor Mark Wagenaar’s sermon titled Effective Prayer, he gives a Biblical guideline for prayer based on Elijah in 1 Kings 18. Pastor Wagenaar from Zion FRC in Fenwick preached this sermon on March 12 of this year. This sermon walks us through five aspects of prayer: posture, perspective, promises, persistence, and productivity. Let us follow 1 Thessalonians 5:17’s advice to “pray without ceasing!”
