Take Heed

“Take heed to God’s Word”

In the light of the king’s countenance is life. —Proverbs 16:15

Read Proverbs 16:1-20

In the next week-and-a-half, we hope to study the book of Proverbs. As you probably know, Proverbs was written by King Solomon. It is loaded with spiritual and practical wisdom. In verse 15 we read, “In the light of the king’s countenance is life.” This means that when a king’s face shone with friendliness, he would be favourably inclined to his servants. We can also draw this conclusion when we read about God’s kindly face. When the Lord is near, believers experience His favour and the hope of eternal life. This is a miracle of grace, for the Lord has many reasons to be angry with you and me. But for the sake of Christ, He looks to His people in favour. Have you experienced this?

In verse 20 of the original Hebrew, we read that we must give our attention to God’s Word. That means that we must study this Word and live out of it, for then we shall find eternal life. Let us therefore meditate on this text every day. Our daily activities can overwhelm us – our work, hobbies, and homework demand our attention, making it so easy to forget to read God’s Word. But it is this Word alone that can lead and guide us to repentance and eternal life.
